This year, Canon celebrates its fiftieth year in Europe. Here’s a selection of memorable moments from its history – and a taster of what else was happening at the time!

1957 - Canon Europa establishes its first office in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1 – the first artifical satellite to orbit the earth.

1961 – Canon’s original Canonet model is released, with the innovative ‘Electric Eye’ – a metering system which automatically calculates and adjusts exposure. Many other companies follow the camera’s lead.
Construction of the Berlin Wall begins.

1971 – The Canon F-1, a top-end SLR camera, is released.
The first email is sent by Ray Tomlinson, an American computer programmer

1976 – The imaging world takes a leap forward with the Canon AE-1, the first camera with an embedded micro-computer.
The first commercial Concorde flight takes off.
